Should TV programmes be dubbed ?
Some people believe that British and American TV programmes should be broadcast in English in other countries because it
would help local people to learn the language. However,
there are both advantages and
disadvantages to this idea.
On the one hand, it is clear that watching TV in English would
improve people’s listening
skills. They would be
used to hearing common words and
expressions and so they would recognise them more easily in real life.
On the other hand, not all TV viewers are students of English. Shouldn’t
people have the freedom to
decide which language they want to hear?
Personally, I believe that dubbing TV programmes takes away a valuable resource that students of English could use. People ought to be able to choose the language they watch a programme in.
